COMMUNITY HOUSE AND PHANTOME FILLING STATION

12th and South Magnolia Street

01/ 03

Formerly a small adjudicated blighted property on the corner of 12th and South Magnolia St, the Community House is now the heartbeat of the Coterie’s work in the neighborhood and a gathering place for their business incubator and youth entrepreneurship programs, as well as community events and meetings. The space is used as a drop-in safe spot for neighborhood youth and anyone else looking for a bit of company, a place to rest, and yes, often something to eat. It gives residents a sense of ownership and pride in the community, and because of the Coterie’s commitment to deepening intergenerational connections to the neighborhood’s heritage and culture, it creates a nexus for sharing stories and culture and tightening community bonds. LHFH purchased the filling station (gas station) and with the help and leadership of the Coterie, they rehabbed the former filling station into an elevated and covered stage and expanded driveway with bike racks, recycled tire planters (an homage to the site’s automotive past), string lights, and a colorful shipping container painted proudly with the statement: “We are McComb-Veazey.” The Filling Station is where concerts, performances, and other events can take place in the open air, attracting passersby and curious neighbors who pull up chairs. The draw has been so big that, on occasion, the crowd has blocked traffic at the intersection with the Magnolia Street mural.

“I think that the [Community House] is really good for the community because it gives somebody a sense of belonging. Anyone is invited. Anyone can come…. Even if no one’s here, you could come sit on this porch and relax yourself if you want to because it is, again, a Community House and available to you.”

“It’s definitely difficult to cross Pinhook to try to bring your kids to the park. And that’s in the heat; it’s really a long walk. So that little pocket park has a lot of shading; they have a good play area for the kids, and people get to just sit out.”
